Description

This Apple Upside Down Cake recipe features a buttery vanilla base topped with caramelized apples for a stunning and flavorful dessert. Perfect for fall baking or any time you’re craving a cozy, crowd-pleasing treat. Keywords: Apple Upside Down Cake, caramel apple cake, easy apple dessert.

Ingredients

2 to 3 medium apples

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup unsalted butter (for topping)

1/2 cup unsalted butter (for batter)

3/4 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup milk or buttermilk

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 10-inch cast iron skillet or cake pan well.

2. In the pan, melt 1/4 cup butter and brown sugar over medium heat until bubbling. Remove from heat.

3. Arrange thinly sliced apples over the caramel in a circular pattern.

4. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.

5. In another bowl, cream 1/2 cup butter and granulated sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla, beat well.

6. Add dry ingredients to the wet, alternating with milk, mixing just until smooth.

7. Gently pour batter over apples and smooth the top.

8. Bake for 40–45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

9. Let cool for 10–15 minutes. Run a knife around the edge, place a plate over the pan, and flip.

10. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Let the caramel topping cool slightly before layering the apples to avoid shifting.

Don’t overmix the batter to keep the cake light and fluffy.

For extra flavor, add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the batter.
