Ingredients
1 pound breakfast sausage
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 1/2 cups whole milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 can refrigerated biscuit dough (16 oz)
1 tablespoon melted butter (optional)
Instructions
1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and crumbly. Leave about 1–2 tablespoons of fat in the pan.
2. Sprinkle the flour over the sausage and stir constantly for 1 minute.
3. Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring continuously to create a smooth gravy.
4. Bring to a simmer and cook for 4–5 minutes, or until the gravy thickens. Add salt and pepper.
5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 baking dish.
6. Pour the sausage gravy into the prepared dish and spread evenly.
7. Cut biscuit dough into quarters and arrange evenly over the gravy.
8. Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes or until biscuits are golden and fully cooked.
9. Optionally brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter.
10. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving warm.
Notes
For fluffier biscuits, don’t press them into the gravy—just lay them on top.
Make the sausage gravy up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate until ready to assemble.
Add shredded cheese between the gravy and biscuit layer for a cheesy variation.
