Ingredients
1 can refrigerated biscuit dough
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 ½ cups shredded Gruyère cheese
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
1 egg, beaten (optional, for egg wash)
Instructions
1. In a skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter and add sliced onions. Cook slowly for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized. Stir in thyme, garlic powder, salt, and pepper during the final minutes.
2. Cut each biscuit in half and gently flatten. Place a pinch of Gruyère and a spoonful of caramelized onion in the center. Fold and seal into a dough ball.
3. Grease a bundt pan well. Layer the dough balls into the pan, adding any remaining cheese and onions between layers.
4. Brush with beaten egg for shine if using. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes, until golden and puffed.
5. Let rest for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate. Garnish with extra thyme and serve warm.
Notes
Let the onions fully caramelize—rushing this step will impact the depth of flavor.
If you’re using homemade dough, let it rise once before forming the balls.
Add extra cheese between the layers for more gooey texture throughout.
