Ingredients
1 pound ground sausage
2 medium apples, chopped (such as Granny Smith)
1 large yellow onion, diced
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
8 cups day-old bread cubes
2 cups chicken broth
4 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped
1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. In a large skillet, brown the sausage over medium heat. Once cooked, remove and set aside.
3. In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add diced onion and celery, and sauté until soft.
4. Stir in the garlic and chopped apples; cook for 2–3 minutes until just tender.
5. In a large bowl, combine the bread cubes, cooked sausage, sautéed vegetables, and herbs.
6. Gradually pour in chicken broth, stirring until the bread is moistened but not soggy.
7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
8. Transfer the mixture to the baking dish and spread evenly.
9. Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is golden and crisp.
10. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
Use day-old bread or toast fresh bread cubes in the oven to avoid a soggy texture.
You can prep everything the night before and bake it just before serving.
Customize by adding dried cranberries, pecans, or mushrooms for extra flavor.
