Description

This Monte Cristo Breakfast Casserole is a savory-sweet brunch favorite, layered with brioche, ham, Swiss cheese, and a custardy egg base. Perfect for holiday mornings, meal prep, or feeding a crowd, this easy breakfast bake delivers comfort and flavor in every bite. A must-try for fans of Monte Cristo sandwiches!

Ingredients

8 slices brioche or challah bread

12 oz sliced ham

8 oz Swiss cheese, sliced

6 large eggs

2 cups milk or half-and-half

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons powdered sugar, for topping

Instructions

1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and layer half of the brioche slices across the bottom.

2. Add half the ham and cheese evenly across the bread layer.

3. Repeat the layers with the remaining bread, ham, and cheese.

4. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, mustard (if using), salt, and pepper.

5. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the casserole, pressing gently to soak the bread.

6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.

7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

8. Bake covered with foil for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 20–25 minutes until golden and set.

9. Cool for 10 minutes before slicing.

10. Dust with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

Use thick-sliced brioche or challah for best texture.

For a richer custard, use half-and-half instead of milk.

Add a layer of raspberry jam between ham and cheese for a twist.
