These Old Fashioned Sour Cream Donuts are crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and dipped in a sweet glaze. With a tangy richness from sour cream and a cake-like texture, they’re a throwback treat that’s easy to make at home—no yeast or rise time required.
Ingredients
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2/3 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
2 large egg yolks
2/3 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
2 cups powdered sugar (for glaze)
3 to 4 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
- In a mixer, cream together sugar and butter until light and fluffy.
- Add egg yolks and vanilla extract; mix until combined.
- Mix in sour cream on low speed.
- Add dry ingredients to wet mixture gradually until fully combined.
- Wrap dough in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Roll dough on floured surface to 1/2-inch thickness; cut into donut shapes.
- Heat oil in a heavy pot to 325°F (163°C).
- Fry donuts in batches, 2 minutes per side until golden.
- Drain on wire rack and cool slightly.
- Mix powdered sugar and milk for glaze; dip warm donuts and set back on rack.
