Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

1 and 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 and 1/4 cups buttermilk

1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)

1 tablespoon melted butter (for topping)

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (for topping)

1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan and line with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper (if using).

3. Fold in shredded cheddar until coated evenly in the flour mixture.

4. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and melted butter.

5. Slowly pour wet mixture into dry mixture and gently stir with a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.

6. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.

7. Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.

8. While still warm, brush the top with melted butter mixed with garlic powder and chopped parsley.

9. Let cool 10 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack. Slice and serve warm or store for later.

Notes

Do not overmix the dough — a slightly lumpy batter keeps the loaf soft.

Always use freshly shredded cheese for the best melt and flavor.

Let the loaf cool slightly before slicing to avoid a gummy center.
