Description

This Salisbury Steak Meatballs recipe is the ultimate comfort food—juicy meatballs simmered in rich brown gravy and served over mashed potatoes. A cozy dinner idea, perfect for weeknights, freezer meals, or hearty gatherings. Includes beef meatballs, savory onion gravy, and pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1 large egg

2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 medium yellow onion, minced (half for meatballs, half for gravy)

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 cups beef broth

2 tbsp all-purpose flour

2 tbsp ketchup

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1 tbsp chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, 1/2 of the minced onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until just combined.

2. Form meatballs using your hands or a cookie scoop for even sizing.

3. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a drizzle of oil. Brown meatballs on all sides, then remove and set aside.

4. In the same skillet, sauté the remaining onion until soft, then add garlic and cook for 1 minute.

5. Sprinkle flour into the pan and whisk for 1 minute. Slowly pour in beef broth while whisking constantly to avoid lumps.

6. Stir in ketchup, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until gravy thickens.

7. Add meatballs back into the pan, cover, and simmer on low heat for 15 minutes or until fully cooked.

8. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice. Garnish with chopped parsley.

Notes

For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey or chicken and adjust seasoning to taste.

If baking instead of pan-frying, bake meatballs at 400°F for 15–18 minutes before simmering in the gravy.

Freeze meatballs and gravy separately for up to 3 months—perfect for make-ahead meals.
