Description

This creamy Scalloped Potatoes recipe is the ultimate comfort food side dish made with layers of tender Yukon Gold potatoes, a velvety cheese sauce, and a golden bubbly top. Perfect for holidays, potlucks, or weeknight dinners, this easy potato bake is rich, cheesy, and totally satisfying.

Ingredients

2.5 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, thinly sliced

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 cloves garlic, minced

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1.5 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon salt

0.5 teaspoon black pepper

2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. Peel and slice the potatoes thinly using a mandoline or sharp knife, about 1/8-inch thick.

3. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.

4. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.

5. Gradually pour in milk and cream, whisking constantly until smooth and thickened.

6. Season the sauce with salt and black pepper. Remove from heat.

7. Layer one-third of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour one-third of the sauce over the potatoes and sprinkle one-third of the shredded cheese.

8. Repeat the layers twice more, ending with the remaining cheese on top.

9. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.

10. Remove the foil and continue baking for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.

11. Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped thyme or parsley if desired.

Notes

Slice potatoes evenly to ensure uniform cooking and creamy texture.

Freshly shredded cheese melts better and adds extra richness.

Letting the dish rest before serving helps the sauce thicken and enhances flavor.
