Description

These French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes are a quick dinner packed with savory ground beef, sweet caramelized onions, rich melted cheese, and soft toasted buns. This easy recipe is perfect for busy weeknights, comfort food cravings, dinner ideas for the family, and hearty food ideas when you want something simple, warm, and satisfying.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup beef broth

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 ounce onion soup mix

1/4 cup ketchup

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup shredded mozzarella or 4 slices provolone cheese

4 hamburger buns or 8 slider buns

1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, optional

Instructions

1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring often, until soft and lightly golden.

2. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain excess grease if needed.

3. Stir in the minced garlic, onion soup mix, black pepper, and salt. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

4. Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and Dijon mustard. Stir well and simmer for 5 to 7 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.

5. Toast the buns lightly in the oven or in a dry skillet.

6. Spoon the beef mixture onto the bottom buns and top with mozzarella or provolone cheese.

7. Broil briefly if desired until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

8. Add the top buns, sprinkle with parsley if using, and serve hot.

Notes

Cook the onions slowly so they develop a sweeter, deeper flavor.

Toasting the buns helps keep them from getting soggy.

Provolone gives the most classic French onion flavor, but mozzarella melts beautifully too.
